Shin lab

Research Team

Principal Investigator

Picture
Jung-Bum Shin, PhD. Associate Professor
I received my PhD in the lab of Gary Lewin at the Max Delbrueck Center in Berlin, Germany. I then moved to the lab of Peter Barr-Gillespie at the Oregon Health Science University in Portland for my postdoctoral studies. In 2010, I joined the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Virginia.
I enjoy all kinds of sports (active and passive), my favorite being soccer. I am trying to keep up with the undergraduate and graduate students in pickup games, but it is getting increasingly difficult. I also used to read a lot, but recently have become lazy and have resorted to binge-watching Netflix and Amazon Prime shows.

Graduate Students

Picture
Elizabeth Wagner, graduate student
I’m a graduate student in the Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics program. I graduated from Clemson in 2015 with a dual B.S. degree in Biochemistry and Genetics, with a minor in psychology. My project involves characterizing the repair of noise-induced damage to hair bundle stereocilia. In my free time, I like to read, watch Clemson football, spend time with my dog, and explore Charlottesville.

Sihan Li, graduate student
I am a graduate student in the Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Program. I received my B.S. degree in Biotechnology from Hebei Normal University, China in 2016. My current investigation concerns the roles of different isoforms of MyosinVIIA in mechanotransduction and their gene regulation. I also work on deep-learning, trying to develop new tools for image denoising and ABR analysis. Outside the lab, I like to play badminton and hike with my friends. I am also a video-gamer when left on my own.

Resident/Neurotology/Clinical Researchers

Picture
Rachel Jonas MD, ENT resident
I am a Resident Physician in the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery
here at UVA.
I joined the Shin lab for a 4 months research block

Undergraduate Researchers

Picture
Danny Chen, undergraduate researcher
I work with Beth to elucidate the role of XIRP2 in hair cell stereocilia damage repair and maintenance. Nothing makes me happier than going to the lab and conducting research, playing sports, and helping people out in any way possible.

Izzy Seka, undergraduate researcher

Prachi Joshi, undergraduate researcher
I am an undergraduate student majoring in Computer Science and Biology. I work with Sihan to explore image denoising tools, and, in my free time, I love to dance, hike around Charlottesville, and stay involved in my community!
